Strengthen the connection between patients and therapists
A mental illness can deeply impact a person's wellbeing and day-to-day living. Even after seeking the help of therapy, it's still hard to manage and tackle this problem.
This is a project that aims to help people solve mental health problems. Sense.i is a therapy management and progress monitoring platform that streamlines the therapy process, making it more effective for both therapists and patients. It achieves this through features like real-time collaboration, file and schedule management, and an integrated wearable tattoo technology.

Mental illness is a big issue for modern people and it is hard to manage and improve it. As we explored and evaluated a vast amount of areas, we focused on Anxiety to narrow down our scope. We started of our primary research on Anxiety disorder and did product audit with the existing mental health app in the market. We found that
1 in 5 American adults live with anxiety disorders. It is the most common mental health concern in the United States.

It is hard to recover from Anxiety disorder in one try
That being said, most people suffer from anxiety disorder for a very long time and they have to try various methods to tackle it and recover from it.
Existing products focusing on relieving it
There are a lot of products like meditation app, games, self-help guidance that aims at helping people relieve anxiety attack. But other than therapy, there's seldomly an app that focuses on providing an effective method to solve it.
Our Initial Attempt
How might we utilize technology to help people with anxiety?
Detect and Predict anxiety
Detecting emotional status and accordingly predicting anxiety via wearable devices like body gesture sensors, wearable tattoo sensors, voice sensors, and etc.
Emotional support to mitigate anxiety
Providing real-time feedback, emotional support, and mitigation strategy by using their own memories, and proven clinical methods.
Validating our idea
To validate our idea, we conducted preliminary research including literature review, interviews with technologists, therapists, subclinical people who are anxious, and clinical patients who are suffering from anxiety issues.
Our solution causes more problem
There's a business opportunity to work on.
Most of the products focus on the therapist's side of business management (bills). They pay less attention to the patients' side
How does a typical CBT therapy session look like?
How might we utilize biodata to streamline the therapy process for both therapist and patient?
Explore different layout design just to find the best one work for target users - therapists
We converted that information flow into low fidelity screens and kept iterating with feedbacks and critiques. At each iteration stage, we refined the fidelity and the usability of the product.
Iterate from low to high fidelity with the feedback that we collect from user testing
We put usability testing after our mid-fidelity designs. We tested on the two therapists that we interviewed and also sent out to 12 real therapists through the usability testing website. From the feedback and suggestions that we gathered from all the tests, we further made more changes and confirmed the final design.
Deliver improved tailored care through Physical and homework data analysis and real-time progress tracking
Psychological data is collected via wearable tattoo devices from patients. Analyzed and visualized data is shown to therapists.
Patient treatment sessions can be planned, edited and tracked here.
One place to manage all files and collaborating on CBT homework more effectively.
By giving therapy all the homework templates and the choice of the self-editable file, Sense.i makes it a lot more convenient for therapy to manage all their files and with just a click he can send the homework to the patient with a set amount of time that requires.
Essential tools that helps therapists manage their day to day work
Sense.i takes cares of management and provides therapy with timely-arranged appointments, schedule, work notes, message to help therapist focus on the important tasks related to therapy.
Sense.i Patient Side
Personalized patient side interface to easily track progress and take charge of personal development.
Patients can be more in control of their therapy, as they have access to physical data collected by tattoo sensors, work on homework with instructions from the therapists, ask for guidance from therapists when they need.
Comments from therapists
We gained a lot of promising feedback from professional therapists, and one that we consultant throughout our project is very interested in taking it further. And we will collaborate with therapists in Anxiety and Stress Clinic at UT Austin to continue pursuing our product.

If you decide after the class that you want to pursue it further, then we can set a meeting with my adviser and take things from there.
Looking back at the journey, I realize that it has been a huge learning experience, allowing me to grow as a designer. Each stage of the process presented us with new objectives and challenges, overcoming which only helped us understand design better.
Understand users is the key to design
Human-centered design is based on a full understanding of the context and target users. We dedicated a huge portion of the semester on this stage, which at first felt a bit excess, but later proved to invaluable to the process. One cannot overemphasize the importance of informed decisions.
Collaboration sparkles greater ideas
Effective collaboration and free to share ideas within a team is what leads to a better design approach. While working in a team, creating a productive and idea-oriented environment is crucial. When individuals are free to express, the ideas that sprout from the smallest of comments can make a huge impact on the product.
Don't be obsessed with the first idea
Iteration validates design solutions
Explorations and re-iterations based and research and user testing are what play a crucial part in determining how well the product would serve its users. Working and changing the design direction is better than letting the process stagnate.
Iterating with real users is the key to validate whether the design works or not. User testing can happen in different formats. Whether it's an online one or in-person testing, they all serve the result of validating the solution.
